Job Description for Coordinator for Kitchen Ministries

  • Reporting to Coordinator for Facilities, Ryan Soderholm

  • Working approximately 20 hrs/wk

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the use and maintenance of the kitchen facilities, including:

    1. Ensure that Minnesota Department of Health rules and regulations are appropriately followed.

      1. Keep the kitchens in good working order.

      2. Plan for and oversee the implementation of needed equipment or other improvements with the approval of the Pastor for Operations.

      3. Keep an accurate account of kitchen supplies and equipment.

      4. Ensure that adequate staples are on hand – coffee, condiments and paper products.

      5. Provide training in kitchen rules and the use of kitchen appliances for those using the facilities, both staff and volunteers.

      6. As applicable, coordinate the nursery staff use of the kitchen for toy sanitization.

      7. Be on the constant lookout for kitchen ministry volunteers and provide solid training and appreciation for them:

        1. Words of encouragement.

        2. Notes and occasional gift cards, as the budget allows, and in coordination with the Pastor for Operations.

      8. Launder kitchen towels and linens.

  • Provide a good quality, inexpensive meal for the congregation on Wednesday nights through the school year:

    1. Plan a nutritious menu two weeks in advance.

    2. Purchase food, keeping to an established budget.

    3. Oversee food preparation, service, and cleanup.

    4. Supervise the volunteer staff in their assignments.

  • Provide a good quality, inexpensive meal for funerals, church receptions, church events, other outside events:

    1. If the meal will come from an outside caterer, help the department to establish a per-plate/per-event scale charged to the group sponsoring the event.

    2. If the meal will be prepared in house:

      1. Work with all appropriate parties, planning a nutritious menu.

      2. Purchase food, keeping to an established budget.

      3. Oversee food preparation, service, and cleanup.

    3. Supervise the volunteer staff in their assignments.

    4. Work with ministry departments to find the needed kitchen ministry volunteers.

  • Provide and/or coordinate food service for wedding rehearsal dinner or reception:

    1. Oversee permission to use the kitchen (i.e., have final word on which receptions and caterers can be placed on the kitchen calendar).

    2. Determine and discuss menus and costs with appropriate parties.

    3. Oversee (or delegate) work with volunteers (including youth workers, when appropriate) to coordinate serving needs during reception.

    4. Coordinate wedding reception or rehearsal dinner with the appropriate church staff.

    5. Provide appropriate kitchen orientation for any outside caterer.

  • Oversee recruitment, development, coordination, and appreciation for volunteer kitchen workers (see above), which includes training of kitchen staff regarding dangers of possible hazards like:

    1. Potential contact with cleaning and sanitizing agents.

    2. Exposure to hot food, equipment and metal objects used in cooking and baking.

    3. Exposure to sharp knives.

  • In coordinate with the event organizers and the facilities department:

    1. Ensure that serving stations, and tables/chairs are set up as needed.

    2. Provide guidance to the ministry department on décor, keeping in compliance with the Fire Marshall.

    3. Ensure that items are appropriately cleaned before being put into storage.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities As Ministry Areas Are Able to Afford Them:

  • In coordinate with the event organizers and the facilities department:

    1. Coordinate with custodians and other church staff for event needs.

    2. Be the first point of contact when ministry areas would like their events to serve a meal. Ensure the following:

      1. You or a trained volunteer oversee the meal planning and preparations.

      2. The cost of the meal (including your time) is covered by the amount the ministry area or the participants pay.

    3. Ensure that serving stations, and tables/chairs are set up as needed.

    4. Provide guidance to the ministry department on décor, keeping in compliance with the Fire Marshall.

    5. Ensure that items are appropriately cleaned before being put into storage.

Other Duties:

  • The Coordinator will carry out such other duties as may be assigned by the church from time to time.

Role Description

In dependence on God, the aim for all Ministry Assistants is to wholeheartedly glorify Jesus Christ, seeking to spread a passion for the supremacy of God in all things for the joy of all peoples through Jesus Christ by providing pastoral help (hands and feet) to implement or do a ministry. Ministry Assistants shall maintain a Christian spirit of love and service toward the staff, congregation, and those we serve, in accordance with the church’s vision and philosophy of ministry.

Godly Character

  • Seek to sustain a vital, growing relationship with the Lord through personal and corporate worship, study of God’s Word, prayer, and regular, ongoing fellowship with believers at The North Church.

  • Model servant leadership and exhibit a helpful, joyful attitude. 

  • Be an individual of prayer and of the Word, sensitive to what the Spirit is saying to The North Church, devoted to daily prayer and Bible reading for the sake of being guarded from sin and stirring up one’s heart and mind to renewed passion for Christ. Gladly participate in mutual care and accountability with other believers.

  • Seek to do duties in the power of the Holy Spirit, undergirded with prayer, guided by the Scriptures, and manifesting the character of Christ for the glory of God.

Church Member

  • Be a member in good standing of The North Church or, if not a member when called to the church, become a member as soon as possible, ideally completing the membership process within three (3) months of the date that employment begins.

  • While ensuring first loyalty is to God and the Word, support the leadership of the church generally and specifically for one’s area of ministry. Strive to maintain positive and fruitful relationships with other church employees, members, and leaders. While concerns or differences of opinion may arise, all employees will communicate in a biblical manner and abide by appropriate supervisory direction and any final determinations of the Council of Elders.

  • Have the vision and organizational skills necessary to work effectively, creatively, and flexibly within the context of a church with multiple staff members and ministries. 

  • Strictly maintain appropriate confidentiality according to the guidelines set forth in our Employee Handbook and Relational Commitments.

  • Give servant-hearted support to specific area(s) of ministry as well as to the broader needs of our church office and ministry.

Skilled Leadership

  • Recognize volunteers as valuable co-laborers in ministry and will be proactive, prayerful, and persistent in recruiting for the role.

  • Have the ability to manage the kitchen and oversee the food preparation and service for church events, large or small, regular and irregular.

  • Have a Food Manager Certificate from the Minnesota Department of Health.

  • Have the physical ability to:
