“Pursuing Freedom from Pornography, Together”

Many men struggle with pornography in silence, carrying the weight of shame, discouragement, and isolation. If that describes your experience, know that you are not alone. The grace of God is greater than our sin, and in Christ there is hope, forgiveness, and the promise of ongoing transformation.

Freedom Groups are a 12-week discipleship experience for men ages 18–29 who desire to pursue freedom from pornography within the context of Christian community. Through Scripture, prayer, honest conversation, and mutual accountability, participants are encouraged to bring hidden struggles into the light and walk alongside one another toward lasting change.

As men pursue Christ together, they will learn to recognize patterns of temptation, identify deeper matters of the heart, and develop practical tools for walking in faithfulness and obedience. Above all, Freedom Groups are rooted in the hope of the gospel—trusting that God is at work to renew minds, transform hearts, and lead His people into greater freedom, deeper joy, and richer fellowship with Christ.

Freedom Group FAQs

  • Freedom Groups are designed for men ages 18–29 who attend The North Church. Regardless of how long you have struggled with pornography, whether you are single or married, or what steps you have taken toward freedom so far, you are welcome to participate if you are willing to commit to the group guidelines outlined below.

    Please note that these groups are not currently structured to address struggles involving homosexual or child pornography. If you are facing either of these challenges, we encourage you to contact Pastor Brian Liechty so that he can help connect you with more appropriate sources of care, accountability, and support.

  • Freedom Groups will launch in the fall beginning the week of September 13th and run through the week of December 13th. Three groups will be offered:

    • Two groups meeting Wednesday evenings from 6:50 to 8:30pm.

    • One group meeting Sunday mornings from 9 to 10:40am.

  • Each Freedom Group is led by a facilitator and a helper who have personally struggled with pornography and have experienced genuine freedom through the power of the gospel.

    Their role is not to serve as professional or licensed counselors, but to help guide conversations, encourage honesty, foster accountability, and point participants back to the hope and truth of Scripture.

  • To foster honest conversation, meaningful relationships, and focused accountability, each group will be limited to six to eight participants, including the facilitator and helper.

  • Because there can often be a stigma surrounding pornography use, we are taking several steps to protect the confidentiality of participants.

    The only person who will know the membership of every group is Pastor Brian Liechty, who will receive registrations, place participants into groups, and oversee the ministry. Additionally, all groups will meet in discreet locations throughout the church, such as one of the pastors’ offices.

    Our desire is to create an environment where men can be honest about their struggles while being treated with dignity, grace, and compassion.

  • No. There is no cost to participate in Freedom Groups. The North Church Counseling Ministry has covered the cost of all books and materials.

Freedom Group Commitments 

Each participant commits to the following guidelines:

  • I will attend faithfully. I will prioritize our meetings, saying no to competing commitments when necessary. I will arrive on time, miss no more than one meeting, and notify the leader in advance if I am sick or unable to attend.

  • I will foster honest and edifying conversation. I will share openly about my struggles and listen with humility and care. I will avoid interrupting or dominating discussion, ask thoughtful questions, and respond with grace. I will refrain from offensive or unnecessarily graphic language and offer counsel with wisdom and gentleness—without pressuring others to follow my advice.

  • I will avoid sharing unnecessary details that could tempt or lead others into sin. When discussing my struggles, I will avoid including specifics (such as naming particular websites or describing ways to bypass accountability software) that could create temptation or become a stumbling block for others.

  • I will maintain confidentiality. I will guard the trust of the group by keeping what is shared confidential. I understand that confidentiality does not apply in situations involving threats of harm to self or others, abuse of a minor, or a refusal to disclose ongoing pornography use to a spouse. In such cases, I will inform the group leader so appropriate care can be provided.

  • I will rely on Scripture and the assigned curriculum. I will allow the Bible and the assigned, biblically grounded curriculum to guide our discussions. While I may have personally benefited from other books, counselors, or resources, I will not introduce those materials into our meetings.

  • I will support and pray for the leadership of the group. I will respect the facilitator’s role in guiding discussion and trust their care for the group. I understand that facilitators are not professional or licensed counselors, and I will support them through prayer and encouragement.

  • I will come prepared. I will set aside at least 75 minutes each week to complete the assigned reading and homework so I can participate meaningfully.

  • I will pursue peace. I will seek unity, avoiding gossip or divisive speech. If conflict arises, I will go directly to the person involved and, if needed, invite the group leader to help bring resolution.

Registration is open now through September 6 or until groups are full. Because space is limited, please carefully review the information above—including the schedule and group commitments—to ensure that you are able to participate fully. Approximately one week before the group begins, you will receive a welcome email with the names of your facilitator and helper, along with your group location.
