Job Description for Director for Operations

  • Reporting to Pastor for Preaching & Vision, Steven Lee

  • Hours: Full-time

Responsibilities

Responsibilities for Specific Areas of Ministry

General Responsibilities:

  1. Ensure the church's functions are legal and above reproach.

  2. Work with the pastoral staff and elders to develop and present an annual budget to the congregation. Monitor contribution and expense levels throughout the year to ensure appropriate compliance with the approved budget.

  3. Oversee, in conjunction with MRM Accounting Services, the Financial Secretary, and the Treasurer, the fulfillment of all IRS requirements.

  4. Develop and maintain a general operations policy manual, and ensure that individual policy manuals are created as needed for the ministries of the church.

  5. Manage all church insurance contracts and needs, including those relating to buildings, grounds, rental property, transportation, and personnel.

  6. Manage tasks so that the infrastructure serves the ministry, and not the other way around.

Oversee and appropriately coordinate each of the four main sub-departments of the Operations area, ensuring they are aligned with and supporting the overall church mission priorities and ministries:

  1. Building & Properties, as they provide efficient, effective, safe operation and use of all things relating to the church’s properties, vehicles, and related equipment.

  2. Finances (outsourced) provides the design, implementation, and maintenance of our financial operations.

  3. Human Resources, which provides oversight for and the development of our human resources and payroll.

  4. Information Technology (outsourced) provides oversight for and development of the design, implementation, and maintenance of our electronic communication tools, namely, our computer systems, network infrastructure, phone system, office technology, and information systems.

Provide coordinated and collaborative leadership within the Operations area by…

  1. Executing all responsibilities in harmony with the church constitution, bylaws, and elder-approved strategic directions, practices, and policies.

  2. Representing the Operations department at various levels of leadership (pastoral staff, elder council meetings, strategy meetings, etc.).

  3. Supporting, coordinating, and cooperating with various other initiatives and activities.

  4. Solving problems within the area by means of information, communication, collaboration, and biblical peacemaking.

Other Responsibilities:

  1. Serve as the staff liaison to the Financial & Property Administrators (FPA’s).

  2. Serve as the staff liaison to the Council of Elders and their staff compensation sub-committee of lay members.

  3. Be a member of our Health Insurance Resource Team (which includes representatives from Bethlehem Baptist Church, The North Church, South Cities Church, Bethlehem College & Seminary, CityJoy, and Campus Outreach).

  4. Serve on other committees, as needed (e.g., elder sub-committee for updating constitution and by-laws, fundraising/campaign committee, etc.).

Supervisor Responsibilities:

  1. Participates in interviewing, hiring, and training employees.

  2. Participates in job description creation.

  3. Ensures ministry responsibilities are fulfilled.

  4. Approves short-term ministry objectives.

  5. Conducts annual performance evaluations and provides regular performance feedback.

  6. Facilitates conflict resolution.

  7. Approves paid time-off requests.

  8. Resource to all other staff working within Operations who report to other supervisors.

  9. Ensures an appropriate balance between the various ministries. 

Other Duties:

  1. The Director will carry out such other duties as may be assigned by the church from time to time.

Role Description

In dependence on God, the aim of the Director for Operations is to wholeheartedly glorify Jesus Christ by providing oversight for and development of the daily administrative, financial, and logistical church systems. The Director shall maintain a Christian spirit of love and service toward our staff, congregation, and those we serve, in accordance with the church’s vision and philosophy of ministry.

Qualifications & Requirements

Godly Character

  1. Meet the spiritual and character qualifications of a deacon as found in 1 Timothy 3:8–13 and exhibit the fruit of the Spirit as found in Galatians 5:22.

  2. Seek to sustain a vital, growing relationship with the Lord through personal and corporate worship, study of God’s Word, prayer, and regular, ongoing fellowship with believers at The North Church.

  3. Model servant leadership and exhibit a helpful, joyful attitude. 

  4. Be an individual of prayer and of the Word, sensitive to what the Spirit is saying to The North Church, devoted to daily prayer and Bible reading for the sake of being guarded from sin and stirring up one’s heart and mind to renewed passion for Christ. Gladly participate in mutual care and accountability with other believers.

  5. Seek to do duties in the power of the Holy Spirit, undergirded with prayer, guided by the Scriptures, and manifesting the character of Christ for the glory of God.

Church Member

  1. If working more than 15 hours per week, be a member in good standing of The North Church or, if not a member when called to the church, become a member as soon as possible, ideally completing the membership process within three (3) months of the date that employment begins.

  2. While ensuring first loyalty is to God and the Word, support the leadership of the church generally and specifically for one’s area of ministry. Strive to maintain positive and fruitful relationships with other employees, members, and leaders. While concerns or differences of opinion may arise, all employees will communicate in a biblical manner and abide by appropriate supervisory direction and any final determinations of the Council of Elders. Whether completing daily tasks or submitting to those in authority, the Custodian will do so in a joyful manner.

  1. Have the vision and organizational skills necessary to work effectively, creatively, and flexibly within the context of a church with multiple staff members and ministries. 

  2. Recognize volunteers as valuable co-laborers in ministry and will be proactive, prayerful, and persistent in recruiting for the role (as applicable).

  3. Strictly maintain appropriate confidentiality according to the guidelines set forth in our Employee Handbook and Relational Commitments.

  4. Sign our Employee Handbook Acknowledgement Form and comply with all applicable church policies.

  5. Give servant-hearted support to specific area(s) of ministry as well as to the broader needs of our church office and ministry.

  1. Be knowledgeable of the principles, methods, and trends in the area of ministry. Serve as a source of counsel, information, and analysis for decision-making related to the area of ministry, especially as it connects to and affects other ministries of The North Church.

  2. Demonstrate thorough responsibility, proactive thinking, big-picture analysis of needs and resources in the area of ministry, and a capacity to provide direction and oversight for the ministry. Be sensitive to the broader context of ministry at The North Church, looking to fulfill ministry in a way that will flourish and support the whole church well.

  3. Have 2-3 years of network oversight experience in a business, ministry, or non-profit.

  4. Possess budget experience in a business, ministry, or non-profit organization.

  5. Possess familiarity with Human Resources activities and requirements.

  6. Possess experience in process design and implementation.
